Do Halloween and Christians Mix?

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when well-meaning Christians argue about what to do with Halloween. And there certainly are lots of loud and passionate opinions to go around.

I get that – but can we all take a breath – step back for a moment and remember that first and foremost we are to love one another as Christ loves us. Then, as in all things, we are not called to pass judgement on others and engage in arguments that lead to division and damaged relationships.

The book of Romans has a few words to say about this very who’s right and who’s wrong business. “Why do you pass judgment on your brother or despise your brother?

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

Having said that, I think we all would agree there are things about Halloween that are anti-Christian and should be avoided. And as parents, educators and caregivers If we’re going to allow our children to participate in Halloween, we have a responsibility to keep them from getting involved in the darker aspects of the day.

Personally,  I don’t think there’s anything evil about a Christian allowing their child to dress up as a princess or cowboy and walk around the block, with adult supervision, visiting neighbors and seeking treats. Neither do I think it’s evil to attend a costume party.

What’s important to remember is that if we’re going to take part in Halloween, our attitude, dress, and most importantly, our behavior should reflect a redeemed life. This is beautifully said in a letter written to the Christians in Philippi, “Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.” That goes for trick-or-treat on Halloween just as much as it does for “merge left in one mile.”

The decision is ultimately ours to make. Pray about it – seek wisdom from the Word of God—and may you have peace of mind with peace in your heart and home on Halloween.
