Let’s be honest.  Doesn’t having a clean, organized home make you feel good?

And if “home is where the heart is” wouldn’t having a clutter free heart also add to that good feeling?

Here are some tried and true ways I’ve discovered for creating that good feeling and making it last.

Two Tips for Tackling The Trash:

  1. Keep Calm and Carry On.

Don’t let the big picture overwhelm you. Take a deep breath and start small. Pick a project with the confidence you can quickly complete it.  Then tackle the next project and keep going…

  1. Face The Dark and Dust Unafraid.

Grab a flashlight and ready yourself for serious battle.  Open an overstuffed closet and  boldly walk into the attic, storage shed or garage.  Be brave and courageous. Select an item.  Hold it in your hand and ask yourself: Does this thing make me happy? If the answer is “yes”—keep it and use it. If the answer is “yes, but I don’t need it,” it’s gotta go.  Of course if the answer is “no,” you definitely need to pitch it or pass it on. And always remember: Never keep anything ugly – that stuff will grow on you! Be decisive and purge, purge, purge!

Bonus Tip:  Play “Beat The Clock.”  Set a timer for 30 minutes and see how much clutter you can conquer before it goes off!

Two Tips for Clearing Heart Clutter:

  1. Ask for help.

Like my closets, attic and garage my heart is often deeply stuffed with things I’d rather not deal with. Things like, past hurts, justified sin, anger and unforgivness. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, always available for the asking through prayer, I can open the eyes of my heart and with His enlightenment begin to clear the clutter one issue at a time.

  1. Let God Lead.

When it comes to matters of the heart God knows us better than we know ourselves. He sees and knows what we cannot see. If we’ll trust Him He will gently clear the clutter of sin from our hearts and with His own hand lead us to exactly where we should be in life.

Like nearly everything else in this Christian life, keeping clutter from creating chaos in our hearts and homes takes time and consistent monitoring.  Let’s make spending time alone with God a priority, ask Him to open the eyes of our heart and show us the places where we’re in danger of collecting clutter.  That’s REAL spring cleaning—and it sure feels good!
