“Be on the alert, your adversary the devil prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.” 1 Peter 5:8

Fiery Dart

Maybe you have had an experience like one I recently encountered with a broken mirror.

I had spent an hour praying and reading my bible during my quiet time with the Lord and now it was time to head downstairs to the conference I was attending.  I stepped into the bathroom to freshen my lipstick and bumped my cosmetic bag, perched on the counter. Were it not for my lack of depth perception, I could have easily intercepted the little mirror that slid from the bag and hit the floor. Instead, I missed.

It landed face down, with its gold-colored back still intact and showing no damage.  “That’s a good sign,” I thought but involuntarily held my breath as I lifted the mirror from the tile floor and turned it over. “Oh, no,” I exhaled. What used to be my favorite, just the right travel-size mirror, was now a collection of shiny shards held together by a plastic frame.

A great deal of change has recently occurred  in my life and, as I looked at my fragmented image, I suddenly felt very discouraged.  It was a though I was looking at a reflection of the shattered hopes and dreams I held for the future. Then, as if out of nowhere, came the thought, “Great! A broken mirror. Just what I need; seven years bad luck on top of everything else.”

But then, praise be to God, I remembered something else.  Something I had read moments before in the sixth chapter of Ephesians. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The thoughts I was having were not from my Lord and Savior. They were the fiery darts of Satan, the accuser, the slanderer, the murderer, the deceiver, and the father of lies! I remembered too that I have the power, through Christ who lives within me, to choose my thoughts. I do not have to believe every thought that comes my way.

“Wait a minute!” I said, out loud. “I thank you Jesus that for the blood you shed on the cross that sets me free from the superstitious beliefs of the world. I refuse, in the name of Jesus, to believe these lies!”

I looked in the mirror again and this time thought, “This is not a time of brokenness and shattered dreams.  This is a time of change; a time to look at things a new way.” I pitched the broken mirror into the trash, finished applying my lipstick and headed out the door to face the day the Lord had made for me to rejoice and be glad in.

It has  taken a while for me to find another “just right” travel mirror, but I have, and each time I use it I thank God for freeing me from the superstitions of the world and the strength He has giving me to see things daily in a new way.

The next time you are tempted to knock on wood, throw some salt over your shoulder, say “jinx,” cross your fingers or do something similar, Stop! Thank God for the faith He has given you to be free of the world’s superstitious beliefs that undermine His protection, provision and power to perform the perfect plan and purpose He has for your life. Don’t be passive. Hold up your shield of faith and extinguish the fiery darts of Satan’s lies!
