What If the Most Productive Thing You Could Do This Year Is Take a Vacation?

In a culture that celebrates busyness, taking time off can feel indulgent. But vacations aren’t a luxury—they’re an essential part of maintaining balance in life.

My late husband, a seasoned Navy captain, once explained something about ships I’ve never forgotten. From time to time, a ship must “zero its spot knobs.” It sounds funny, but after a ship has spent time at sea firing its weapons, its navigation and targeting systems must be recalibrated to ensure they operate accurately and are ready for whatever lies ahead.

He also told me about degaussing stations. As steel-hulled ships travel through the oceans, they gradually develop a magnetic signature. Left unchecked, magnetism can interfere with navigation and, in wartime, make the ship vulnerable to magnetic mines. Passing through a degaussing station removes that buildup and restores the ship’s operational readiness.

People are much the same way.

The pressures of work, family responsibilities, finances, health concerns, grief, and endless to-do lists gradually pull us off center. Like a ship accumulating magnetism, we carry stress, worry, and fatigue without even realizing it. We need time to “zero our spot knobs”—to recalibrate our priorities, restore our energy, and regain perspective.

Time away allows us to rest physically, refresh mentally, reconnect with others, deepen our faith, and remember that life is about more than crossing another task off the list. Even Jesus understood the importance of renewal. He often stepped away from the crowds with His disciples to rest and pray.

One of the sweetest surprises of a vacation is coming home. Suddenly, the grass looks greener, the dog seems fluffier, and your own bed never felt this good before. Time away has a way of helping us appreciate what has been there all along.

Perhaps the wisest thing you can do this year is take a vacation. So, consider this your permission slip-and plan some time away.
