What’s in Your Garage?

Is your car parked in the driveway because there’s no room for it in the garage?

When the roof of a friend’s car was badly dented as the result of a well-forecasted hail storm, I asked, “Didn’t you know the storm was coming?”

“Oh, yes, I knew,”

“Well then, why didn’t you put your car in the garage?”

“Couldn’t— too much stuff in there. You think these dents will pop back out when the sun hits them?”

If you’re like my friend I have great news for you. Begin boxing up all that garage clutter and plan to attend the annual Peach Tree 23 Yard Sale, spanning 44 miles from Batesburg-Leesville to Modoc, South Carolina along SC Hwy 23. You just missed this year’s,  it’s always held the first weekend in June, but you have a whole year now to sift, sort, sell, pass on or pitch.  http://www.peachtree23.com

While you’re at it, check out Maria Kondo’s book  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. I promise it will change the way you think about clutter, and might just keep you from the temptation to fill up your trunk with other people’s junk. http://amzn.to/1JwhFpO

Our hearts can be like garages that gradually become so full of other things that there’s scarcely room for God anymore. Then one day, like cars parked in the driveway, in front of chock-a-block garages, Jesus is relegated to the back porch of our lives to stand on the outside looking in, knocking and trying to get our attention. “Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in…”  Revelation 3

Get rid of whatever’s keeping Jesus on the periphery of your life. Clear the clutter and expand the room in your heart until Jesus occupies it all.   “…love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  Matthew 22:37
