Penny’s Opening Comments for Edgefield County’s 2014 National Day of Prayer Event

“On this, our National Day of Prayer for America, from 9 AM this morning and until midnight tonight, tens of thousands of Christians will have been in prayer for our nation.

As we, the faithful of Edgefield County, South Carolina come to join our fellow believers in Christ with One Voice United In Prayer our first prayer should be, that Jesus Christ be lifted up in our nation.

Two things that Jesus said point to this reality:

  • In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
  • And in John 8:12 Jesus again said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

There is no other place to find hope than through Jesus Christ.

Secondly, we must pray for our national leaders. The greatest thing needed in leadership is wisdom.   Proverbs 9:10 clearly states, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”  Therefore we should pray that our leaders to seek God and His wisdom – for there is no wisdom without God.

We also pray tonight for God’s peace and provision for the thousands of Americans affected by the recent outbreak of tornadoes that have ravaged our land and protection for those still in danger of floods.

Finally, the promise that overrides the deep need of prayer for our nation, is found in 2nd Chronicles 7:14.  Solomon was the wisest man ever, and this is the promise God gave him:

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

This is our hope. Tonight as Pastors from local churches lead us, we will plead with One Voice United In Prayer, for God to hear from heaven, forgive us and heal our land as we pray for
